Apanhar um peixe com as mãos
Writing a book is a way of casting memory into the future. How do we look back on life and rewrite it into stories, poems, and works of fiction that nourish the imagination of millions of readers? Memory is as difficult to grasp as a fish caught with bare hands—but how do we hold onto it, refine it, and reshape it through multiple perspectives?
Through literature, words play a vital role in creating worlds that often, as Oscar Wilde suggested, place life in perspective: does art imitate life, or does life imitate art?
On the last Friday of every month*, at the Casa da Memória de Guimarães, we will be joined by a guest for an informal conversation about memory, literature, and many other subjects. Each session will also include an open reading, and everyone is invited to take part. Bring along a poem, an excerpt, a flash fiction piece, or simply a few words you would like to share, and join us for a glass of wine and literary conversations—and much more.
Each edition is presented in partnership with Evineo Wine Boutique, which will curate the wines served. Their selection will add a new dimension of discovery and shared experience to every session.
Judite Canha Fernandes
Born in Funchal in 1971, she is a writer and playwright.
She has published poetry, novels, novellas, short stories, and children's and young adult literature. She holds a PhD in Information Science, a degree in Aquatic Sciences, and a postgraduate qualification in Library and Archival Studies.
Among other distinctions, she received the Agustina Bessa-Luís Prize, was twice a semifinalist for the Oceanos Prize, and received honourable mentions in the Ferreira de Castro Literary Prize and the Dias de Melo Literary Prize.
Her novel One Step South (Um Passo para Sul) was nominated for Best Fiction Book by the Portuguese Society of Authors and is included in Portugal's National Reading Plan 2020–2027.
Her latest novel, Honey Without Bees (Mel sem Abelhas), won the Edmundo Bettencourt Literary Prize in 2024. She is one of the 31 women featured in Women of My Country – 21st Century (Mulheres do Meu País – Século XXI).
Her work has been translated into Spanish, English, Italian, French, and German. It has also been adapted for film, radio, and musical composition, and is the subject of academic research at several universities.
Between 2011 and 2016, she served as the European representative on the International Committee of the World March of Women.
Her books are published in Portugal by Gradiva, Companhia das Ilhas, and Pato Lógico; in Spain by Caleidoscopio de Libros and Crea Ediciones; in Brazil by Urutau; and in Italy by Asterisco Edizioni and Nazione Indiana.

Língua Gestual Portuguesa e a língua através da qual grande parte da comunidade surda em Portugal (cerca de 30.000 pessoas) comunica entre si. A expressão "língua gestual" refere-se à língua materna de uma comunidade de surdos. As línguas gestuais são línguas naturais, que surgem e se desenvolvem naturalmente, como as línguas orais. É produzida pelos movimentos das mãos, do corpo e por expressões faciais.
